Impacts and Programming

Impacts and Programs from 2023-2024

​

Community Outreach Kitchen:

- Fruit and vegetable mural was added to the front of the building. The Town of Farmville

matched grant funds as part of the Facade Improvement Grant Program. Partnered with

a local artist.

- Malfunctioning oven and stove top were repaired.

- Refrigerator to store fresh produce was purchased. Grant also provided produce bags.

Partnered with the Farmville Community Garden.

- Deep freezer was purchased.

- Ice Machine was purchased with funding and support from the Pitt County Public Health

Department to support safe food handling practices.

- Restaurant grade cooking equipment was purchased to support safe food handling and

storage guidelines recommended by the Environmental Health Department (Items

included: cutting boards, mixing bowls, serving utensils, braising pot, stock pot, steam

table pans, kitchen bar towels)

- Additional supplies were purchased to support educational programs (Items included:

cleaning products, storage tubs, digital scale, gas stoves, table cloths)

- Hosted 2 landscaping days (6/20/24, 8/15/24) Partnered with volunteers from the

Farmville Public Library on 6/20/24.

- FFH Leadership Team provided lunch service on the following dates: July 31, 2023,

October 30, 2023, January 29, 2024, April 29, 2024, May 27, 2024. Grant provided

compostable clamshell containers.

 

Educational Programs:

COK - 6/15/23-8/18/23, EFNEP FESMM Series. Partnership with Farmville Community Garden.

Grant provided cooking equipment including knives, cutting boards, mixing bowls.

COK - 8/24/23, Tomato Canning Class. Partnership with FCS Agent, Farmville Community

Garden.

FPL - 9/26/23, Coffee & New Seed Library. Partnership with Pitt County Community Garden

Coordinator, Farmville Community Garden. Grant provided seed starter trays.

COK - 12/12/23, Holiday Gathering for food assistance partners and community members.

FPL - 3/28/24, Farmville Community Garden Youth Gardening Program

COK - 4/4/24, Food Safety Program. Partnership with Pitt County Environmental Health Division

of Public Health Department. Grant provided digital food thermometers.

COK - 5/23/24, Strawberry Jam Class. Partnership with FCS Agent. Grant provided pectin,

mason jars.

Ripe for Revival (RFR):

The Pay-What-You-Can Mobile Market began coming to Farmville on October 18, 2023. The

market provides fresh produce, milk, meat and eggs. The mobile market is scheduled on

Wednesday’s from 10:30am-12pm and is located in front of First Christian Church. The FFH

advertises the weekly market on social media. Additionally, FFH members attend the weekly

market to provide assistance to the RFR staff, volunteers and student interns and welcome

community members. The grant provided branded FFH reusable totes for community members

to shop at the market.

FFH members attended the Ripe for Revival Chef Rival Event in Rocky Mount on June 18,

2024. FFH collaborated with the Farmville Community Garden to provide appetizers for the

event in addition to serving as a guest judge for the competition.

Students:

FFH hosted an ECU Student volunteer during the Summer 2023.

FFH served as a preceptor for an ECU Public Health Internship Student during the Spring 2024

semester.

 

Steps To Health (STH) Collaboration:

STH funding was utilized to support Policy, Systems and Environmental (PSE) activities.

- Seed Library at Farmville Public Library. STH funds provided initial stock of seeds.

Installed in September 2023.

- FFH Learning Collaborative. Intensive project being led by NCSU faculty and staff for

the FFH Leadership Team. The initiative started January 2024 and is focused on an

arts-based approach to community needs assessment.

- Farmville Head Start Center - Garden Initiative. STH funding provided a raised garden

bed, vegetable seeds, soil, and gardening tools. Educational materials and books were

also provided to the classroom.

- StoryWalk at J.Y. Monk Park STH funding provided StoryWalk signs.

 

Branding/Outreach:

- Creation of FFH logo

- Shirts with FFH logo were provided to leadership team members.

- FFH Website Website domain name was purchased and site was established.

- FFH Social Media - Instagram, Facebook

- FFH branded tote bags were purchased and distributed to community members at RFR

weekly markets and other educational events.

Presentations:

- FFH members presented to 40 Park Scholars and NCSU Faculty at the Farmville

Community Garden on March 22nd 2024

- FFH members presented at Hookerton District First Christian Church on May 23, 2024.

- FFH members are invited presenters at Rural Advancement Foundation International

(RAFI) Come to the Table Conference on September 30-October 1, 2024.

Other Activities:

- Heirloom Gardens Oral History Project (Sept 27, 2023 and June 29-30, 2024).

- FFH Leadership Team attended RAFI School for Food Justice, Faith, and Storytelling

from Sept-Nov 2023 (8 week series).

- FFH administered the NC Food Insecurity & Access Survey at Word of Truth Anointed

Ministries, Shepherd’s Food Pantry to 30 participants; $5 Food Lion gift cards provided

by NC SNAC on September 29, 2023.
